Strategies to Grow Your Monthly Donors and Boost Giving

Sustainable funding is the backbone of any nonprofit’s long-term success, and monthly donors play a crucial role in making that possible. They provide consistent, predictable revenue—and often become some of the most loyal supporters of your mission. But if you’re not actively optimizing for recurring giving, you may be leaving money (and impact) on the table.

Here are six practical ways to increase your monthly donors—and the amounts they give:

1. Simplify the Sign-Up Experience
Your donation process should be seamless. That means offering one-click sign-up options, clearly labeled monthly giving checkboxes, and donation tiers tied to tangible impact (e.g., "$25/month feeds a student for a week"). People are more likely to commit when they understand the outcome of their contribution and can give without jumping through hoops.

2. Launch a Monthly Giving Campaign
Don’t assume people will naturally opt for recurring giving—you have to ask. Dedicate a specific campaign to highlighting the benefits of monthly support, not just for your organization but for the donors themselves. Focus on the sustained impact they help create, and consider giving the program its own name and identity to make it more memorable.

3. Make Monthly Giving a Consistent Message
If you only mention monthly giving once a year, you're missing opportunities. Integrate it into all your communications—email newsletters, donation pages, social media content, and fundraising events. Regular exposure helps normalize it and keeps it top of mind.

4. Offer Exclusive Perks
While donors primarily give because they care, added value doesn’t hurt. Consider offering simple but meaningful perks to monthly donors: branded thank-you gifts, priority access or discounts to events, or behind-the-scenes updates. These touches reinforce their importance and make them feel part of an inner circle.

5. Focus on Retention
Getting monthly donors is only half the battle—keeping them is where the long-term value lies. Use your CRM to track engagement, automate reminders, and personalize outreach. Celebrate milestones (like one year of giving), follow up on lapses, and be proactive in keeping the relationship strong.

6. Make Adjustments Easy
Donors should feel in control of their contributions. Provide a user-friendly portal where they can increase, pause, or cancel their gifts with ease. The easier it is to manage their giving, the more likely they are to stick around—and even upgrade.
